Where do I find the best electric violin for my performances?

I have heard nice things about the 'fender fv-1' electric violin. nicely priced and good sounding. or for more money the Yamaha EV series are also good instruments. But whatever you do! DO NOT BUY the cheap ones offred on ebay. I was going to buy an electric violin for the fun of it. and a friend of mine that plays professionally gave me that advice. The cheap ones do not hold there tune very long. where the Fender and the Yamaha brands do!

Is the tuning the same on a violin as a mandolin?

Yes. The strings on a Violin are tuned thus: G-D-A-E, exactly the same pitch as on a Mandolin except the Mandolin has 8 Strings(2 strings each of the same pitch) instead of 4 as the Violin has.

I'm looking for ideas on a violin solo this year?

i'm an advanced player and i can do pretty much all positions/bowing styles. i want a piece that's really pretty and has some really fast parts. it doesnt necessarily have to be a fast piece, but i want one that has a couple of really fast parts.

also, i don't want a piece that just has one rhythm over and over again, or a piece that's like an etude.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

If I answered "ZZZZZZZZZZZ" would you report me? But this one isn't so common. Try one of the simpler Paganini pieces. ;)
You need to obtain a graded list of violin solos. I bet that ASTA (American String Teachers Association) among others, has one. This will help you find where you ARE, and then comparable pieces in terms of difficulty. I am a flute teacher, and have several different lists of flute literature -and then, I databased them ALL, and cross-referenced them - ther is always ONE list that has a piece graded in the *wrong* level - what were they thinking?

Your best resources is your teacher. Beyond that, check professional resources. And on Yahoo Groups, there is a wonderful flutenet list - betcha there is a good violin list for you to join, too. Go for the one with the most members and most traffic.

In the orchestra there are 16 more violin players than cello players the total number is 66 how mani

ok, here's how you solve it

x = number of cello players

y = number of violin players = x+16 (16 more violin players than cello players.

x + y = total number of players so

x + y = 66

since y = x + 16 then

x + x + 16 = 66

now you add the x's and the integers

2x = 66-16

2x = 50

x = 50/2 = 25

y = 25+16 = 41

there are 25 cello players and 41 violin players.

The name of the song(s) were 'Painter Man' and 'Making Time', from the album titled 'We Are Paintermen'.

Jimmy Page was a session man before the Yardbirds, and employed by famed producer Shel Talmy. One of Shels bands at the time were the Creation. Jimmy Page was influenced by Eddie Phillips technique.

Where can i order cheap but nice violin pick-ups???

I searched ebay for "violin pick-up" and I saw some for pretty cheap. Maybe try there.

What is does it mean when a violin bow is half lined?

Interesting question I happened upon. I will assume you know the different parts of a bow for my answer.

The lining on the bow is the metal on the frog. Half lined bows have only the contact surface with the stick lined with metal.

Full lined bows have metal from the slide around the back of the frog.

I hope that makes sense.

I tried to find some pictures on line that would show the difference. This is best I could find, I think it shows the full lined bow well(you can see the metal, probably silver, comming around to meet the ivory). I couldn't seem to find any to show half lined but I think it will give you the idea.

How many strings are there on a violin?

Four

How many strings are there on a violin?extension

There are 4 strings on the violin

the lowest is - G

next is -D

next is A- 440-

highest is E

If you want to compare other string instruments:

The viola has 4 also;

Also, cat gut connects the tailpiece to the end button. That is definitely not a string that you play.

The bow that you use does not have strings , it is hair, either of horsetail or synthetic.

It's lowest isC

next is--------G same as violin's lowest string

next is--------D same as violin

next is -------A same as

cello- has same strings as viola- but lower.

Double Bass has same strings as violin, but backwards and much lower. ist lowest is E , then A, then D, then G

Violin , viola, and cello are tuned by perfect fifths.

The Double Bass is tuned by fourths.

Belive it or not..there are five, the 4 you draw the bow across and cord then there is ONE that attacts the tail to the body, its not metal its cat gut or leather .. check it out..you said strings...
Four but I have seen some that have five. I guess it is like putting five strings on an electric bass.
Four. Left to right - G, D, A and E!
4 and i play the violin
four
four string
4 - from lowest to highest - G, D, A, E.
Well, I guess you're gonna hear somewhat of the same answer, but let me go a little further.

The four strings everyone has mentioned are E, A, D, and G. That much we all agree on. A 5-string violin also has the next fifth down, so the lowest string would be a C. There are electric violins that actually have 6 strings. The lowest string on these would be an F. And (are you ready for this) Mark Wood, of Wood Violins, has invented a 7-string violin which he calls the Viper. B-Flat for the low string on this baby!

Check out the sound of these instruments at http://woodviolins.com/html/viper.html

And when it comes to tuning, don't forget that alternative tunings are also possible. Just like with a guitar, many folk fiddlers use non-traditional tunings. And you'll often find fiddlers who have two instruments on stage with them during performances because they are tuned to different notes.

Hope that helps.

Know any classical piece for bassoon and violin?

you could try using a violin cello duet for a substitute ... also try finding oboe bassoon duets and there are beethoven duets that are published that are labeled as flute/violin/oboe and cello/bassoon duets and those would work

How do you get vibrato on the violin in one week?

Vibrato usually takes a bit to get down. If you want to start to improve your technique, first try doing long glisandos up and down the string. As you get more comfortable, speed up the glisando and your bow speed. It won't sound pretty at first, but it will improve over time. Start with your middle finger- it's the easiest to begin with.

Oh, and make sure you have your wrist in the proper position when holding the neck of the violin. A collapsed wrist makes it difficult to get the technique down. Also, don't grip the neck with your thumb- just let it pivot on the edge.

maybe Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata for violin and piano ....nice ...or maybe the set of three Haydn concertos, No. 4, 5 and 6: they all go together and have really nice writing for the strings
You can't go wrong w/Mendelssohn E minor concerto, the Bruch G minor concerto, and the Tchaikovsky concerto.

Also, anything Sarasate is very technical
I play the violin and like to listen to more recently created music. U should look these up and she if she might like them.

Barrage- A group that travels the worlds a has an interesting style of music

Apocalyptica- cello group from Europe that plays some gentler songs and some hard rock ones.(THEY PLAYED AT THE OLYMPICS, AWESOME)
I'd have to agree with coconut - Beethoven's Violin Concerto - get the Penguin Classics version with Arthur Grumiaux - good and reasonably priced.
Violin Concerto in D by Tchaikovsky is absolutely amazing. Pure genius. All three parts are incredible. It has to be one of the most complicated pieces for a violin, though.

How do you do vibrato on the violin?

How do you do vibrato on the violin?listen to opera

vibrato is going slightly sharper and slightly flatter than the actual note for that wobbly sound. Rock your finger back and forth, without taking it off the string. Depending on the kind of music, you will want to have a faster or slower vibrato.

Try this site:

are ya trying to get the same sound as a temolo bar on a guitar? depress the violain string above teh nut or below the bridge while you play it, this will cause a vibrato sound
All you have to do is kind of wiggle your finger when you're holding down the string (so the opposite hand you hold the bow in). You can probably just figure it out.

What is the normal size of a violin?

Children typically use smaller instruments than adults. Violins are made in so-called "fractional" sizes: 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, and 1/16; even 1/32-sized instruments exist. A 7/8 violin is sometimes used by an adult violinist of shorter stature as their final instrument, but rarely as a transitional instrument.

These fractional sizes have nothing to do with the actual dimensions of an instrument; in other words, a 3/4-sized instrument is not three-quarters the length of a full size instrument. The body length (not including the neck) of a "full-size" or 4/4 violin is about 14 inches (35 cm), smaller in some 17th century models. A 3/4 violin is 13 inches (33 cm), and a 1/2 size is 12 inches (30 cm). By comparison, when dealing with the violin's closest family member, the viola, size is specified as body length in inches rather than fractional sizes. A "full-size" viola averages 16 inches (40 cm).

If you own it then it probably is not a genuine Stardivarius. Millions of violins have that label inside "1721 Stradivarius". The chances of you owning the real thing is very, very small.

Where did you get the violin ? Can you post a picture of it ?

Take it to a proper violin shop and ask them for an appraisal. Do NOT take it to a music shop. They know nothing about violins.

This is what the genuine labels look like :

http://www.abcviolins.com/labels.html

http://www.fritz-reuter.com/DOC/articles...
And Stradivarius's first name was Antonius, not Sntonius. It is a fake - the label means that it was made in the "style" of Stradivarius, or basically, it is a copy. You'll find most violins are copies. After all, Stardivarius made some of the nicest sounding violins in the world. Why not measure them and then build cheap ones out of crappy material. In my profession (music teacher), we call these ISO's (Instrument Shaped Objects)

I know one person with a real Strad. He uses is for concerts only, and rehearses on a cheaper one. It's insured for well over a million dollars and is locked in a safe.
Many violins have that same label - it is a tribute. If you own a Mickey Mantle model baseball bat - it does mean HE actually owned it, does it?? Before this violin got to you, if had really been a Strad, it would have been snagged already, and sold for well over a million dollars. Nobody is trying to deceive you - we ALL know about the tribute labels. Sorry . .

the shorter side of the brigde is for the e string.

the taller side of the brigde is for the g string.

Where does the bridge go on my violin?concerts opera theater

I hope your not thinking of repairing this yourself, take it to a music shop and have it fixed by an expert, or else you could wreck it !!!!!!!!!
Under the strings of course!
line up the feet of the bridge with the little notches in the middle of the "F" shapes cut in the top of the violin. The part of the bridge that goes under the thinnest (E) string might have a bit of darker wood embedded in it. Make sure the strings are loose before your try to get the bridge in, then tighten them.

Good Luck!
If your violin is of good quality, it should have come with the bridge already in place. You should send it back and tell them to put it on. Anyways, the feet of the bridge lines up with the notches in the f-holes.
j@$eph is right. although, if your not a professional i would reccomend you take it to a luthier because its very easy to break a string, or even the bridge if you do not place it correctly. most people i talk to believe that you are supposed to glue the bridge in place. do NOT do that. you can ruin the sound your violin produces, because the bridge acts as a microphone. it also ruins the finish, and will most likely cause the tailpiece to break too.

How can I tell if a Stradivarius violin i have is the real thing?

the inside sticker Cremona, Antonius Stradivari is inside and the date is supposed to be 1723 with the cross and the letters but it says Germany on the top not the bottom of the sticker. The detail is great and the barnish although it has been somewhat abandoned is still shiny, online there is so much info and it is hard to tell and so not want to pay someone to take a look at it only to tell me it is worth nothing at all and it is in fact a copy before having some kind of certainty.

How did you get ahold of such an instrument? I would be rather skeptical. The Stradivari instruments made around 1720 are usually valued in millions of dollars. It's believed that there are only around 700 of these still in existence, and very few are unaccounted for.

Do you like Ravel's Tzigane for Violin and Piano or Orchestra?

I love it with the orchestra because the colours help highlight the gyspy-esque, middle-eastern themes. Though when the orchestra comes in, I feel like harp doesn't have the projection and the dreamy sound of the piano. Because it's all staccati and I prefer the piano entrance, which is all fluid arpeggios.

Do you like Ravel's Tzigane for Violin and Piano or Orchestra?imax theater

I love the orchestral version, with all its effects and colors. Ravel was a master orchestrator -- the use of the winds especially is wonderful.

That being said, there are concessions you have to make playing with an orchestra that you don't have to worry about with a piano. An orchestra is an unwieldy beast, and doesn't change course very easily, so some of the rubato that you might use when one person is accompanying you has to be toned down when there are 60. Of course, if you get to play it with New York Phil, for instance, that's not as much of a problem...

Do you like Ravel's Tzigane for Violin and Piano or Orchestra?classical music opera theater

Well, I can see why you'd like it with piano. However, performed correctly, with the orchestra it can be a marvelous piece. The player need be virtuousic and the conductor sensitive (and the skills of the harpist are sorely tested!). I particularly like the older vengerov's rendition and by a friend I know attending college. It's crazy!
i almost always like a composition for orchestra moreso but i have not heard this composition though.
I think I recall this one, and I think I enjoyed it.

I wish I could offer a better answer now. What I really need to do is listen to it again, but do not have that CD.

I'll call up the local classical radio station and see if I can get them to play it.

How to correctly hold the bow for violin?events opera theater

My conclusion after many years of practicing and performing is that there is NO correct way to hold either the bow or the violin. It’s all in the final result which is of course the quality of your sound… So… start practicing and hearing yourself… You will find the best “correct” way that fits you… As a general “rule”, the bow should be straight…

I know that I will be “crucified” for my answer… you can always check in youtube and see if all the great masters hold the instrument in the same way!!!
What are some of the techniques teachers use to approach beginning students?

http://beststudentviolins.com/PedagogyTe...

how to hold the bow (1-2-3): (1) thumb is placed, under frog for little ones, crooked near grip for adults and older children (thumb and 2nd finger make "doggie" circle); (2) first three fingers are dropped across stick, tilted slightly toward the tip, with space between 1st and 2nd finger (importance of 2nd joint of 1st finger for the purposes of controlling articulations is later examined—often); (3) pinky finger is curved on inside of bow (add Pinky Pad)
Ur fingers should be bent naturally the same way they are bent when u relaxedly let ur arm hang by ur side. U should be able to hold the bow only with the first 3 fingers with the last 2 fingers only giving support.
The bow hold is crucial to making a beautiful tone, but it is complicated to explain. Make sure you learn the correct way so you don't have to "undo" a bad behavior.

Get a good teacher.
You put your thumb in the inside of the bow on the end of the wooden part, (between the hairs and the wood) and have the rest of your fingers on the top part of the wood. sorry its really hard to describe. but heres a pic http://www.hants.gov.uk/education/hms/in...
It is very hard to explain and it takes a lot of practice. Read what the other people have to say and consult with your teacher. But for the tension part... This will probably sound like I'm insane or something, but make sure your elbow and arm are completely relaxed. You should not hold the bow with a tight grip (I understand that it is really hard when you are learning because it feels like it is going to fall) but most of the "pressure" should be in your fingertips and finger knuckles. It is also very important that your pinkie finger curves and the tip of it is touching the stick of the bow. Once you have a good bow grip, place your bow on top of the bridge on the violin and go from one side of the bridge to another on the frog, middle, and tip of the bow. (The tip should be last because it is the hardest.) You should feel the pressure changing from your first finger to your pinkie. Practice this everyday (even I do it!) and soon you will have a great bow grip. Also make sure that your bow is properly rosined so that it won't slip on the strings. Good luck!

How do I remove rosin from my violin strings?

How do I remove rosin from my violin strings?playhouse

How do I remove rosin from my violin strings?plays opera theater

Use alcohol. using anything else especially abbrassives, would get the strings rusty
i played the violin when i was going to school. i used a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol-not much, you don鈥瞭 want to ruin the violin with drips. just a little on the rag and rub.
Rosin remover is totally unnecessary - any kind of dry cloth alone will do. Violin stores sell cloths specifically geared towards rosin removal. Some removers isn't good for the strings, and some stuff might not hurt, but it's not needed. Your strings do not need to be squeeky clean to produce a perfect sound. Just be sure to clean the strings after every session, so as to avoid rosin build-up.

What's the difference between Viola and Violin?

I am going to start learning Viola, which is easier to play? Not many people play the Viola so that's why I want to play it. I can also get into an orchestra.

What's the difference between Viola and Violin?classical music

Both are equally hard. Both have beautiful sounds. But viola needs more work on bow weight and control because of its thicker strings. It's harder to get a good sound out of the lower viola strings than the violin. Viola is bigger and tuned a perfect 5th lower than the violin - violin open strings are GDAE, viola's is CGDA. It also has a darker, mellower tone quality as compared to violin. Viola usually doesn't get a lot of solo parts in orchestras, it's used more for the middle harmonies. So it may seem unimportant, but once you take out the viola section, you can immediately tell that something's missing without looking at the performers on stage. But I've heard viola solos and they sound as beautiful as violin solos - velvety, warm, rich. Viola reads the alto clef whereas violin uses treble. The note-reading may be more challenging if you're not used to looking at clefs other than treble and bass. You'll get used to it soon enough though. I learnt to read it fluently within 3 mths of switching to viola from violin (because my school orchestra needed violists, so they asked me to switch to the viola section).

What's the difference between Viola and Violin?ms stress opera theater

Actually, viola is harder. Not by much.

The viola is actually a compromise instrument. Full-sized violas have a body length of 15 to 17 inches, typically; but that's undersized--if we enlarge a full-sized violin properly to support tuning a fifth lower, it would have a 21 or 22 inch body length. But an instrument that large would be impossible to play "a braccia" (under the chin), so the instrument gets undersized a bit--explaining why it's often difficult to get a good tone on the lower string of the viola.

Greater size and weight means that there's more pressure on the chin and laterally on the cervical and dorsal spine. In simple terms, violists get upper back and jaw problems more than any other instrumentalist.

Because the fingerboard on the viola is larger, it makes fingerings more difficult. Some of the more technical orchestral pieces are not so tough on violin but they give the violas a severe workout.

And, as aforementioned, bow weight on the strings is more touchy.

Given all that--you'll want to get the largest viola that your fingers and neck can stand (for tone). Start working with the instrument by practicing for 10-15 minutes four or five times daily, and then increase the length of one of those practice sessions by no more than 10% each week--this is to build up your muscle and joint strength properly, avoiding upper back injury. Eventually you get your stamina up to an hour and then you can pursue one or two long practices per day.

(On a theoretical level, I wonder, wonder, wonder why violists don't break with tradition, get instruments with 21-24 inch body length, and play them "a gamba"--on the leg, sitting them up on their laps like an octave-cello. That would provide advantages in technique, remove the hazard of back maladies, and provide a monster tone from even a mediocre instrument.)
See:

What's the difference between the violin and the viola?

http://beststudentviolins.com/StringCare...
The spelling is different. For one!

The viola's timbre sets it apart: its rich, dark-toned sonority is more full-bodied than the violin's. The viola's mellow voice is frequently used for playing inner harmonies, and it does not enjoy the wide solo repertoire.

The viola is usually bigger.

Mainly, they are close to the learning curve.
A viola is slightly bigger than a violin and is tuned lower. Also the violin's strings are E, A, D, G and the viola's strings are A, D, G, C (5th below the violin).. the same as a cello but an octave higher. Most violin music is in the treble cleff whereas most viola music is in the alto cleff.

I'm not sure which is easier to play but I reckon the viola has a nice tone to it as it won't be as squeaky and loads of people already play the violin. The cello is also a really nice instrument though.. I personally think it has the nicest sound :)
Viola: The viola (French, alto; German Bratsche) is a bowed string instrument. It is the middle voice of the violin family, between the upper lines played by the violin and the lower lines played by the cello.

The casual observer may mistake the viola for the violin because of their similarity in size, closeness in pitch range (the viola is a perfect fifth below the violin), and identical playing position. However, the viola's timbre sets it apart: its rich, dark-toned sonority is more full-bodied than the violin's. The viola's mellow voice is frequently used for playing inner harmonies, and it does not enjoy the wide solo repertoire or fame of the violin.

The name of the instrument is properly pronounced "vee-oh-la" (but often incorrectly pronounced "vai-oh-la" as the woman's name "Viola" is spoken).

Violin: The violin is a bowed string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. It is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments, which also includes the viola and cello. (The inclusion of the double bass in the family is disputed.)

A violin is sometimes informally called a fiddle, no matter what kind of music is played on it. The word "violin" comes to us through the Romance languages from the Middle Latin word vitula, meaning "stringed instrument";[1] this word may also be the source of the Germanic "fiddle".

A person who plays the violin is called a violinist or fiddler, and a person who makes or repairs them is called a luthier, or simply a violin maker.
maybe their size differ from each other, spelling is obvious
I play the violin. The only difference is that the viola is lower in sound.
If you have no orchestral experience, neither instrument will be any more difficult than the other. Viola is interesting in that it is played in the alto clef though. So that will be a bit of an extra step in the learning curve.
Actually, I know, they are only the same, only that Viola is the Italian Translation of Violin.

Duet/Concerto-type piece for clarinet and violin?

Very random...but for our orchestra concert there is a spot for one more full song, and my best friend (the concertmaster) and I both want to do pieces. The easiest thing would be if we could find one good song that both of us can be featured on together, and it doesn't necessarily need an orchestra accompaniment though it would be nice. So just a really strong duet piece...we're both really good players, we're both going on to study music in college after this year this is our senior performance :)

Also, just in case we decide to go it alone...what's a good concerto piece for clarinet? I'm leaning towards either the first or the third movement in Weber's First Concerto, but is there another piece at about that level that you could recommend? I'm not familiar with numbered levels or I'd give one...also I don't want to play Mozart's clarinet concerto, I'm playing that one now on my own but I dont want to do it for the concert.

Thanks :)

What exactly is the difference between a violin and a fiddle ?regal theater opera theater

A violin is a fiddle. There are other instruments that are called fiddles, too, but a violin is far and away the most popular and common.

The difference is NOT the bridge!

Plenty fiddlers play with a standard curved bridge, and I'm one of them.

Some fiddlers DO prefer a flatter bridge, but that choice is part of the freedom of fiddling (as opposed to the rigid traditions of violin) and NOT a definitive characteristic of a fiddle.

A flat bridge does not make double stops any easier...the distance between two adjacent strings is always a straight line no matter what the curve. It does make triple stops easier but not all fiddlers care.

This has been asked dozens of times here it seems. Search for many more comments.

Oh, I just noticed the category. Revised answer:

1. No one cares of you spill beer on a fiddle

2. About $3,000
Well, the standard joke is... nobody cares if you sit on a violin. Actually they're the same instrument. At Carnegie hall it's a violin and in South Rubber Boot Alabama it's a fiddle.

But violins are used for posh music - and fiddles will play any tune.
A Violin is a musical instrument

A Fiddle is a quick frill when no one is around !
The difference is in the bridge, which is deliberately made slightly flatter to facilitate double and triple stops, (chords) and in the modifications that are sometimes made to help the player blend in with the group they are playing with. some of these modifications include an extra string at the bottom so the fiddle player can play those low droning notes behind a vocalist or soloist. Electronics may be added so the fiddle can compete with the electric guitars and P.A. systems used in larger halls. A violin can be easily adapted to suit a fiddler, but they used to be two distinct instruments. I the Middle ages a Fiedel or Fidel was a boxy shaped instrument. It worked very much like a violin, and gradually the two instruments blended into the modern violin that we know today. This is very common with early instruments.

There are playing styles that can easily be discerned as well, but you should be able to identify these on your own. There is the more relaxed posture of the fiddler (although not always) the dramatic bowing reminiscent of the Hungarian and Romany Fiddlers. Sometimes the Fiddler will use brighter strings to get a bright sound to cut over instruments like the banjo and mandolin. These strings look a lot more like guitar strings in that they have a full round on the wrap and no fuzzies at the tip.

Hope this helps.

A way my 8th grade english teacher taught us that usually always works is to put your hand under your chin. Not too far down, mind you, just a little bit, so that it is not touching but it will be touched when you talk. Now, say the word 'violin' slowly. Count the number of times your chin hits your hands. If you do it corrctly, then you should count 3 times.

Try practicing on these words:

Where did the phrase "the older the violin, the sweeter the music" originate?

I don't know if the saying can be properly attributed, but it does tend to be true. As the wood in a string instrument ages, it dries out and becomes more resonant. Assuming that it has been well cared for over the ages, older instruments do tend to have a deeper and more complex tone. However, some slight problems do present themselves in playing such instruments in a modern setting. Our tuning system has evolved a bit over the past few centuries...our A=440 is different (sharper I belive) than the A that Mozart would have heard. Also, now that we use metal strings that put a greater tension on the neck and body, vintage instruments frequently need some modifications to be of any use today.

It's too hard to explain, so check out this site. But, shifting into third position is harder, so shift into fourth instead. The website has it in fourth position. It's a two-octave scale.

How much would a beginners violin cost be at a pawn shop?

I would avoid pawn shops, unless you have some knowledge of how to find a good quality instrument. For the same reason, I would avoid ebay. I mean, you may find a violin for $50, but it may be such poor quality that it's not even worth that. A cheap violin often doesn't stay in tune, isn't set up well for comfortable playing, and has poor sound quality. People often think that they can get a cheap instrument to start and then upgrade when they improve a bit. But poor quality instruments often lead to frustration and quitting. I've seen it too many times. My recommendation would be to look for a second-hand instrument through other local means. If you can get some assistance from a local violinist or violin teacher as to where to go, that would be great. There is probably some local luthier who sells used instruments on consignment out of his house somewhere in your city. You just need to ask around to find the place to go. Some places to ask: Call the local youth orchestra; call the local school orchestra teacher; call a local music store that offers lessons and ask to speak with their violin teacher; etc. I am a violin teacher, and I have received many calls like this both at the schools where I've worked and at the music stores at which I've taught. It is not at all unusual. Sometimes I've even been able to match people up with a student who is selling a good beginning violin. You can also try www.craiglist.org, but make sure you have someone you trust look at the violin first.

There are many, many good brands; but if you are looking for an inexpensive starter violin, I'd plan on spending somewhere in the $250-300 range, at least. In good condition, any of the following brands would be a good catch in that price range: Glaesel, Knilling, and Scherl %26amp; Roth. An experienced violinist or violin teacher could help you navigate through some of the lesser-known names, but these are some of the more well-known brands that are good for starting on and are often sold to students in school programs through local music stores (so there are a lot of them around). Whatever you do, avoid the $99, $120, or $200 'special' on a new instrument, bow and case. While impressively shiny, you will undoubtedly sacrifice a great deal on quality. I am a profession violinist, and honestly I can't even get some of those cheap violins to sound any good.

I hope you find a great deal on a nice starter instrument, and that you (or you child?) enjoy learning how to play it. I've been playing for many years, and it has brought me a lot of joy.

How much would a beginners violin cost be at a pawn shop?extension

Depends on the quality of the violin. I am a pawnbroker. I start off selling the cheapo beginners at $59 and go up from there.

What should I learn the violin or guitar?

Or should i learn both but which one first?

What should I learn the violin or guitar?secure browser

I would suggest the violin first for several reasons. The violin is far more difficult than the guitar for most people, and therefore you'll need all the time you can to study it. If you spend a few years with violin, you will get to a point that you may then decide to continue with the violin, or switch to the guitar, in which case, you will have an excellent experience with overall music and note reading for lead guitar, which I suspect will be rather easy to master at that point.

Naturally, if you opt for guitar first, you will be losing the necessary momentum of the initial few years you simply must sacrifice to determine the viability of your violin talents.

I played around for many years with guitar, and later somehow, wound up with violin. I sincerely regret not getting into violin many years earlier, but I absolutely love the sound of the violin in MANY types of music.

Rock, Jazz, Improv, Classical, Theater, Musicals, Orchestras, Chamber Music, Soloist, etc. The competition for guitar players in bands these days is absurd! Guitars jocks are a dime a dozen. On the other hand, you would have had to spend several years to get to a decent level on violin, and that would serve you well in a band or soloist where you would meet less competition. Of course the competition for Classical violinists is also huge! Try the Suzuki method for a few years!

You'll remember me years from now!!!

What should I learn the violin or guitar?home theater opera theater

It might depend upon which kind of music you are more interested in. A guitar is a great portable instrument for popular music of many different kinds. A violin by itself is somewhat limited in that respect, but is used more often for classical music.
The guitar!
both are really awesome although the violin takes a while to sound good on but once you can play it classical music is beautiful

on the other hand the guitar is really versatile and you can play alot of different styles of music on it.

personally i would recommend guitar and if you learn it and decide you don't like it you can switch to violin because they are based on the same notes

good luck!
Choose the one that sounds best to you. What kind of genre are you interested in? If it's classical, then violin is your best bet. However, I personally enjoy guitar. It can play all kinds or genres.
Choose the one you like the best. Then learn the other.

If i bought a cheap violin, can i still improve its sound? How?movie theatre opera theater

You could take it to a luthier and have them set it up better, including moving the bridge and soundpost, very likely. And then put a good set of Dominant strings on it.
i have a cheap violin and it's pretty hard to make it sound fantastic but if you buy some really nice expensive strings it makes a big difference.
The easiest thing for you to do is put a good set of strings on it. Dominants are the best ; they cost about $40 per set in the US. Many professionals use these on their very expensive violins.

You will be amazed at what an improvement this will make.

Make sure you use a good brand of rosin too ; throw away that cheap stuff that came with the violin.....it is rubbish. I use Pirastro Piranito ; cost is about $10 per block.

You could also upgrade to a better bow but I would wait and see what the good strings and rosin do to the sound first.

An improvement in sound quality can sometimes be achieved by adjusting the soundpost but this is a job for a luthier.
Cheap junk musical instruments will never sound like anything but cheap junk musical instruments... doesn't matter what they are.

The difference between a cheap piece of junk and something playable is the material it's MADE from... and you can't change that with some magic 'fix'.
I don't think you can. My teachers told me that 'CHEAP' instruments are really hard to make it sound perfect. I would get a good violin and not have the trouble about getting it in tune.

I think it has to do with the quality the violin was made.
A very violin bow and bowing technique can make cheapest violin sing.

"Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber...one of my all-time favorite pieces. Also, 2 pieces from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite...Anitra's Dance (it is all strings + a triangle) and Ase's Death (another tear-jerker), based on a simple theme played over and over at an increasing volume. This one's a sentimental favorite for me.

Then, there's always Mozart ("Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" is probably one of the most famous, but he did write a lot of string quartet music). Another well known quartet is "The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi. J. S. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and a number of other well known composers wrote wonderful music for String quartet. Just go to the iTunes store and write "string quartet" in the search engine, and listen to some samples. Check out J. S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerti (some have other instruments besides strings, but they are predominantly strings).
"Us" by Regina Spektor
Ashokan Farewell is a beautiful piece. Cello Suite No1 prelude is also another great classical piece.

Double-jointed thumb - Help for Violin!?

Hi,

I'm just starting to learn the fiddle, but I'm having trouble with my bow hold.

I can't sustain the correct bend in my thumb, which I understand is important for flexibility when playing.

Instead my thumb curves upwards, like a backwards 'C', if you see what I mean.

Holding it the other way a) won't stay for long becuase my joint pops the other way. I think this is joint hyper mobility, or double jointedness or something.

b) just doesn't feel right or comfortable.

I'm also worried about damaging my joint by holding it in an incorrect way.

Does anyone know a solution? My teacher doesn't seem to have any ideas of what to do.

Thanks!
