What material(s) is used to make violin strings?

I've heard some weird things about this... Looking for the BEST answer, not just a right one.

many years ago they used animal seinue,called cat gut, today the use nylon,slik and steel, stay in tune better than natural fiber

Catgut...which is why they threatened to send Sylvester to the violin factory!
Isn't it catgut?
hmmmm some kind of flexible metal. i'm not sure. just PLAY the violin.
They used catgut in the old times.. now, i think it's specialized steel strings.. look up the wiki article :)
